THC - Roger's Update - 10th October 2017

Q: What is a maths teachers favourite Sum?

Hi there Tornados,
There isn't much to convey this week.. so I have a riddle for you instead:

I am a fruit. If you take away the first letter of my name I become a crime.
Take away the first two letters of my name, I become an animal.
Take away the first and last letter of my name and I become a form of music.
What am I?

Good luck with that one... answer in next weeks newsletter. (If you really can't cope with waiting you can ask Roger - always available on FB)

As the year is fast approaching the end, we look forward to this years wrap at our Annual General Meeting.
As all should know, we have lost many of our committee members this year to the allure of other adventures. If you think you can contribute or would like to find out more there are plenty of positions. Ask Izzy or any committee member regarding what is involved and how you can give back to this volunteer run club.
If you don't have time to participate perhaps instead you can make a donation to the Tornados hockey club as a sponsor (advertising rights options). We will be looking out for companies that might be able to help us continue into the future. Again ask Izzy, or any of the committee members, for details.

RESULTS

The first washout of the league season didn't dampen the spirits of the 4s, who happily tucked into their "last match of the season beers" a couple of hours earlier than expected. Rearranged fixture for the end of the month will allow them to do it all over again...
The 3s suffered the same fate with a washout against ORA forcing them into a double header this weekend.
The storms of Singapore had the ladies LIGA league touch and go all weekend with the ladies eventually able to play 3 out of 4 of the games scheduled. With fluctuating numbers and girls racing against the downpours both teams played well to secure 2 out of the 3 wins. Aifoe came out blazing walking away as the leading goalscorer for the season over just one weekend. Some great saves from Taylor kept the Tornados from being served a severe beating against a top form Dutch team. A near perfect finish from Zaheen in the last 30 seconds made the scoreline more respective of the game.
A good all-round effort from everyone that showed up made for a great busy weekend of hockey.

THC - Roger's Update - 3rd October 2017

Q: What do you called a pissed off German?

CONGRATULATIONS!!

Thats just for surviving the ball.

By all accounts I understand everyone is alive and had a stellar time! A huge thanks to the Ball committee that volunteered countless hours and plenty of effort to bring you such an amazing event. If you see the following give them a round of applause:

Our thanks to:
Phoebe de Raeve
Ruthie Burr
Alice Hogg
Sam Stark
Sarah Bradshaw
Will Woolsey-Brown
Patrick Thompson

The conclusion of the ball saw the conclusion of our president of two years, Adi Trehan's, stay in Singapore. As his last night wasn't overly coherent, this is a message from your President:

Dear Tornados,

As some of you might know, my family and I have to move back to Germany due to work reasons. We have had five and half years of excellent stay in Singapore and for me Tornados family was a very significant part of my stay in Singapore. I came to Singapore in April 2012 and I remember how Fishy and Kris integrated me in the 4s right in the first month of my stay in Singapore. There was no looking back after that. I wish you all the best for the years to come and wish that I can come back to Singapore soon and be with you all again.

Till the AGM decides on the new president, Izzy (Isobel Lyall), has agreed to be the acting President for the ease and convenience it will afford in running the club. I wish her and the committee all the best for the next 2 months and hope that you all would support them.

Thank you and auf Wiedersehen …

Adi Trehan

The Tornados club is sad to see you go Adi and you will be greatly missed. We wish you all the best in your future endeavours and all the best to your family and life back in Germany. You are the best Indian/ German this rhino has ever had the chance to meet.

Just a reminder that until the AGM please contact:

For KIT Ruthie Burr - ruthieburr49@gmail.com
For Membership/ Recruitment Izzy Lyall - isobel.lyall@gmail.com OR 8720 9003

TRAINING

WEEKLY

Wednesday 4th October - Club Training 7 - 10pm @ Delta Complex

RESULTS
Due to the ball, we only had one unlucky team to take to the pitch this past weekend. The men's 3 team turned up in fantastic fashion. Full of beans and keen for a win, the 3's started a fast paced game with attacks from both sides and, of course, great defensive work.
Tornados drew first blood with stand-in captain Alex finding the roof with a spectacular hit.
Not long after they were 2 - 0 with a well taken PC and finish by Sandy.
NTU bounced back in the first few minutes of the second half but were held at bay by the Tornados until the very last 10 seconds of the game when an unfortunate PC against them equalled the scores.
Well done to Alex, Sandy, Daenan and Sam all having a superb game after a late night.

Mens:
Mens 3's vs NTU DRAW 2-2

With Hello's come Goodbye's and we are unfortunate this year to have lost several big personalities from our club. One person that has recently departed to HK to pursue her career is Max. Max has given so much to the club over the last 3 years. As a constant in the committee, she has kept us clad in kit and helped form the club to where we are today taking on extra responsibility as a membership secretary. Thanks for all your hard work and efforts Max. You will be missed.

RESULTS
The 4s enjoyed their long-awaited first win in the league in great style, with strong performances across the pitch. Cheered on by an expectant crowd (of several), it didn't take long before the lads were on the board via MoM; Andy F. Special mention to Adi Treyan in his last match for Tornados who confidently stepped up to place a stroke beyond the reach of the keeper and help the team to a half time score of 3-0. In the 2nd half, everyone wanted a piece of the action with both centre backs up for short corners and a sweet strike from Tim up from left back to finish. Final score; 7-0, well done all!
The 3's continued to sweep up their season with a strong 4-2 win against the Dutch.

In Ladies LIGA, team white were handed a walkover against the no show UWC and the red team were unlucky to miss out on valuable points with a last minute goal conceded to go down to Crescent 3-2.

NEXT WEEK

Tuesday 5th September - Friendly games vs British Army 8pm Men 9pm Women @ Delta Complex
Wednesday 6th September - Men 3&4's Training 8 - 10pm Delta Complex

RESULTS
Mens 3's had a fantastic game coming away with a 4-0 win after what was described as a "Dominant, clinical and outstanding" performance. The win sais it all and the men look like they are looking towards a fantastic season.
Another great effort from the 4's over the weekend. Unfortunately the team was depleted with both captain and vice-captain overseas and several injuries keeping the line-up slim. The men were the first to draw blood and hit the lead but were unfortunately soon back on level terms due to a defensive lapse. The second half saw many missed opportunities to elaborate on the scoreline and Richard (man of the match) did his part in keeping out all the oppositions opportunities to register the fourth draw of thier season.
Ladies LIGA saw one loss and one win. The ladies white team got an early start at 9am, with many new faces, they spent much of the game getting to know each other. With many many near miss opportunities the ladies unfortunately lost a winnable game. The ladies red team called in some handy ringins to fill the void of missing players and spent the majority of the game taking on a great goal keeper.

LEAGUE

Mens 3's vs Dreams WIN 4-0
Mens 4's vs Barkerites

RESULTS
Mens 3's played a young, previously undefeated, Rising Stars team over the weekend. The lads walked away with shared points after a well fought for match and a 'Screamer of a goal' from Daenen. Defence didn't waver under a desperate onslaught from the young team and the 3's held on to the draw while putting a dent in the Rising Stars campaign.
A determined effort by the 4s saw a return from 2 goals down to draw 2-2, including an unfortunate missed flick for the Tornados. Good pressure and strong running in the final quarter of the match couldn't quite pull off the victory but a good effort all round - the win will come!
The ladies had a busy weekend of hockey with a double header each. Some guest appearances and many dedicated girls helped out to walk away with 3 fantastic wins and a loss that didn't reflect the game and quality of hockey played.
