THC - Roger's Update - 24th November 2017

Q: What sound does a turkey with a limp make?

What am I thankful for?? For another bunch of awesome volunteers to keep the club running!

NEW COMMITTEE ALERT!!!

If you missed it... which certainly a lot of you did, but thanks to the awesome group that did show up to the AGM; then here is the news:

As all the committee and other managing positions received only one nomination per position the club voted unanimously in favour for all nominations and hence we have a new committee.

We would like to take this opportunity again to thank the following for all thier contributions to the club through their time on the committee:

  • Aditya Trehan
  • Maxine Chia
  • Andrew Barnardiston
  • Alice Hogg &
  • Charlotte Evans

We are also excited to see a fair amount of the committee members staying on in various roles, hopefully meaning a seamless transition into 2018. Very grateful to the following for their dedication to the Tornados:

  • Izzy
  • Phoebe
  • Lawrence
  • Ruthie &
  • Jono

Probably most excitingly we have recruited new talent to the team and look forward to working with them for the year 2018:

  • Chris Laxton
  • Brad (returning to the committee)
  • Susana Matus
  • Nathan Harwood
  • Natalia Porporato &
  • Lauren Windle

Cheers to an excellent team! Looking forward to 2018!

On that note please come on down/up/flat along to the CHRISTMAS PARTY!!! Say hello to your new committee over an overly generous bar tab and chill out in the heat of SG.

It is our last event of the year with training finishing next week until January!!

See you there,
Love Roger

RESULTS

All about INDOOR this week with the ladies having a one day off tournament for their yearly indoor experience.

Last Saturday, 7 ladies tested out their indoor skills in the annual SHF indoor tournament. coming 4th overall following a last minute disallowed goal in the semi-finals vs. Balestier lions to loose 2-1.

We started off surprisingly well considering our indoor skills were so rusty, but sadly went down 0-1 to the eventual winners, SCC. We then got into the groove, drawing the next games vs. Balestier Lions and winning the next 3 games - being the highest scoring team! This took us to the semi-finals where we unfortunately lost.' A good representation from people who had and hadn't played before and a good platform for more indoor in the future.

I've missed a few weekends so I have two write ups for mens indoor from Captain Akhter:

VS Jansenites: Great stuff & solid effort from Tornados to contain top of the league Jansenites at 2-8. Two goals coming in from Dave K & Eric. Some really awesome saves by goalie Leo. Lack of fitness & bench key factors in the loss.

VS Khalsa last weekend: 1-4 loss vs Khalsa. Our scorer Dave K. Good effort but hard luck, missed a few chances & conceded a couple towards tge end.

Ladies finished of LIGA with a lack of players conceding two losses to end their season neck and neck in 7th and 8th position for the second year in a row showing how similar the teams were.

THC - Roger's Update - 31st October 2017

Q: Why did the ghost go into the bar?

TRICK OR TREAT!

Our Third men's team certainly earnt this treat! Well done on Silver in the NHL 4 league.

As the year is slowly winding down to an end (they are already playing christmas songs in the shops) please make sure you don't miss out on the final few occasions for the year:

AGM, 22nd November
Christmas Party, 2nd December

Reminder: If you can/wish to contribute to Tornados hockey club through sponsorship, committee contribution, other... get in touch with Izzy 8720 9003 :)

Last week we had a riddle that for once challenged some of you. The answer was, 'OR', I know, sneaky right! This week:

A man wants to enter an exclusive club, but he doesn't know the password. Another man walks to the door and the doorman says 12, the man says 6, and is let in. Another man walks up and the doorman says 6, the man says 3, and is let in. Thinking he had heard enough, he walks up to the door and the doorman says 10, he says 5, and he isn't let in. What should he have said?

Happy
All Hallows' Eve
Love Roger

TRAINING

WEEKLY
Wednesday 1st November - Club Training 7 - 10pm @ Delta Complex
Please be advised that training still has a coach (PON) from 8-10pm

RESULTS

The last weekend for both mens 3's and 4's leagues, and both teams ended on a high.
The mens 3's grabbed silver after a good win over SCC with 2 goals disallowed making the difference 3-0, which didn't reflect the strength displayed in the silver winners team.
Mens 4's had an excellent win after settling into their game in the second half to win 3-0 over a speedy Eagles team. Goals came from Inners, Hari and Zhen with some strong defence to catapault the men up the ladder finishing on equal points with Polytechnic. One more win rather than a draw would have seen them in the top 5. So a good season from the fours team this year as well.
The ladies have only a game or two to finish off their LIGA season. The White team took the trip out to Sengkang on Sunday morning to execute a punishing win over the U14 rising stars. Out matched and out classed the ladies gathered another 3 points. The red team played a hard game with some great tackles and passing with low numbers they were only just beaten in a close 2-3 loss.
The Slams got the scoring skills up for the mens 1's with some big wins.

LEAGUE
Mens:
Mens 3's vs SCC WIN 3-0
Mens 4's vs Eagles WIN 3-0

SLAM 6's
Tornados vs Eagles WIN 14-1
Tornados vs Hockey initiative WIN 5-1

Womens LIGA:
Tornados Red vs Balestier Lions LOSS 2-3
Tornados White vs SHF U-14 Rising Stars

THC - Roger's Update - 24th October 2017

Q: Why is superman's costume so tight?

Hi Tornados!

What an awesome AGRO cup! CONGRATULATIONS to the winners, the UK werewolves. (Especially Lucy P)
It was a fantastic afternoon that wound up with a very close flip cup final!

If you missed out on the fun, there are still two more events this year. Get these dates in your diaries:

AGM, 22nd November

Last week we had a riddle that, yet again, was too easy. The answer was, of course, 'JOKE'
Hopefully this one may take you more than a 30 seconds:

RESULTS

I didn't get to see the BIG GAME on Sunday vs the Rising stars but I do know that the boys were keen and it seems that they took it home all the way. Well done 3's lads.
The mens summer slams competition started off in great fashion with the boys dusting off some cobwebs and running about boonlay for a draw and win.
The ladies thankfully had Sunday morning to recover from the flowing beers at Agro. Unfortunately some girls (cough) noticed that the recovery wasn't enough and struggled in the heat of the day. A loss and a win to each of the teams.

THC - Roger's Update - 17th October 2017

Q: How do you spot the blind guy at the nudist colony?

Hi Tornados!
Mid week holidays are the best aren't they... in light of this we are giving EVERYONE the day off from hockey too. Training has been cancelled due to low numbers and the need for a week off for 'some' of us.

This weekend we have the spooktackular AGRO cup. So save yourself for some fun!

Last week we had a riddle that many thought were too easy. The answer was, of course, 'GRAPE'
Hopefully this one may take you at least more than a few minutes:

You can crack me; You can make me; You can tell me; You can play me. What am I?

May Deepawali the festival of lights illuminate your life and bring the shower of glory, prosperity, health and peace!

Happy Deepavali
.

Love Roger

THC - Roger's Update - 10th October 2017

Q: What is a maths teachers favourite Sum?

Hi there Tornados,
There isn't much to convey this week.. so I have a riddle for you instead:

I am a fruit. If you take away the first letter of my name I become a crime.
Take away the first two letters of my name, I become an animal.
Take away the first and last letter of my name and I become a form of music.
What am I?

Good luck with that one... answer in next weeks newsletter. (If you really can't cope with waiting you can ask Roger - always available on FB)

As the year is fast approaching the end, we look forward to this years wrap at our Annual General Meeting.
As all should know, we have lost many of our committee members this year to the allure of other adventures. If you think you can contribute or would like to find out more there are plenty of positions. Ask Izzy or any committee member regarding what is involved and how you can give back to this volunteer run club.
If you don't have time to participate perhaps instead you can make a donation to the Tornados hockey club as a sponsor (advertising rights options). We will be looking out for companies that might be able to help us continue into the future. Again ask Izzy, or any of the committee members, for details.

The first washout of the league season didn't dampen the spirits of the 4s, who happily tucked into their "last match of the season beers" a couple of hours earlier than expected. Rearranged fixture for the end of the month will allow them to do it all over again...
The 3s suffered the same fate with a washout against ORA forcing them into a double header this weekend.
The storms of Singapore had the ladies LIGA league touch and go all weekend with the ladies eventually able to play 3 out of 4 of the games scheduled. With fluctuating numbers and girls racing against the downpours both teams played well to secure 2 out of the 3 wins. Aifoe came out blazing walking away as the leading goalscorer for the season over just one weekend. Some great saves from Taylor kept the Tornados from being served a severe beating against a top form Dutch team. A near perfect finish from Zaheen in the last 30 seconds made the scoreline more respective of the game.
A good all-round effort from everyone that showed up made for a great busy weekend of hockey.

THC - Roger's Update - 3rd October 2017

Q: What do you called a pissed off German?

CONGRATULATIONS!!

Thats just for surviving the ball.

By all accounts I understand everyone is alive and had a stellar time! A huge thanks to the Ball committee that volunteered countless hours and plenty of effort to bring you such an amazing event. If you see the following give them a round of applause:

Our thanks to:
Phoebe de Raeve
Ruthie Burr
Alice Hogg
Sam Stark
Sarah Bradshaw
Will Woolsey-Brown
Patrick Thompson

The conclusion of the ball saw the conclusion of our president of two years, Adi Trehan's, stay in Singapore. As his last night wasn't overly coherent, this is a message from your President:

Dear Tornados,

As some of you might know, my family and I have to move back to Germany due to work reasons. We have had five and half years of excellent stay in Singapore and for me Tornados family was a very significant part of my stay in Singapore. I came to Singapore in April 2012 and I remember how Fishy and Kris integrated me in the 4s right in the first month of my stay in Singapore. There was no looking back after that. I wish you all the best for the years to come and wish that I can come back to Singapore soon and be with you all again.

Till the AGM decides on the new president, Izzy (Isobel Lyall), has agreed to be the acting President for the ease and convenience it will afford in running the club. I wish her and the committee all the best for the next 2 months and hope that you all would support them.

Thank you and auf Wiedersehen …

Adi Trehan

The Tornados club is sad to see you go Adi and you will be greatly missed. We wish you all the best in your future endeavours and all the best to your family and life back in Germany. You are the best Indian/ German this rhino has ever had the chance to meet.

Just a reminder that until the AGM please contact:

For KIT Ruthie Burr - ruthieburr49@gmail.com
For Membership/ Recruitment Izzy Lyall - isobel.lyall@gmail.com OR 8720 9003
On this note: If you are keen to get involved in the committee next year please contact Izzy.

If you loved the ball please stay social and sign up to hang out with me again at the AGRO CUP or/AND the VIETNAM TOUR!! These events are open to EVERYONE including partners (hockey players or not). Lets get involved.

RESULTS
Due to the ball, we only had one unlucky team to take to the pitch this past weekend. The men's 3 team turned up in fantastic fashion. Full of beans and keen for a win, the 3's started a fast paced game with attacks from both sides and, of course, great defensive work.
Tornados drew first blood with stand-in captain Alex finding the roof with a spectacular hit.
Not long after they were 2 - 0 with a well taken PC and finish by Sandy.
NTU bounced back in the first few minutes of the second half but were held at bay by the Tornados until the very last 10 seconds of the game when an unfortunate PC against them equalled the scores.
Well done to Alex, Sandy, Daenan and Sam all having a superb game after a late night.
