Friday blues to Sunday cheers!

A difficult set of matches over the weekend pitted the 1st team against SCC and SRC. It was a mixed bag of results that ultimately ended on a high with a strong win against the ‘young ones’ of SRC.

Friday’s match was always going to be a challenge against a side that we drew against in the first game of the season, but after a strong start we were quickly 2-0 up following some fine finishing from resident Sri-Lankan paceman, Pasan - who was also man of the match. Unfortunately while we continued to threaten more goals, SCC began to find their feet and following some clinical goals on their part they were once again back in the mix.

The second half continued in the same vein with Tornadoes threatening, but failing, to find the back of the net and once again SCC took their chances and we were staring at our first defeat of the season. Great commitment was shown again across the board but this time the goals eluded us!

Fresh from that defeat, Sunday was an opportunity against SRC to make amends and from front to back this was probably our strongest performance of the season. At the front, Pasan once again demonstrated his fleet-footedness, while Gary seemed to have found 5th gear;  interplayed with strong hold-up play from Paddy and inventive passing from Rashid, we were looking very dangerous going forward. Composure was the name of the game both defensively and in the midfield and it was no surprise when we took the lead from a sweet drag-flick from Gary. While we continued to press, more opportunities came and barring some heroic keeping from SRC we would have been a couple up at half time.

Unfortunately Tornadoes were left to rue not stretching their lead, when SRC struck back through a well taken drag flick of their own. The match was finely poised for long periods of the second half and this was backed up by some fantastic saves from le gardien de but and man of the match, Frenchy. There was also tireless running from Joran and co in the midfield and strong tackling from our back three – Rego, Steve and Matt. However as the game entered the last ten minutes, Pasan was released down the right and following a deflection in the box, Paddy was able to sweep home for a well deserved Tornadoes victory.

We now go into a three week break on the back of a convincing win and performance that set us up well for the remainder of the season.
